Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical switch which is small-sized and can be driven by minor electric power, by placing an amorphous semiconductor between optical waveguides. CONSTITUTION:An amorphous semiconductor 6 consisting of Ge-Te-Sb-S, etc. is placed between quartz optical fibers 12 which have been placed so as to be opposed through an optical coupling lens 5, and when a pulse current is applied to a driving terminal 8 of its electrode 7, the amorphous semiconductor 6 which light-transmissible in the initial state is metallized reversibly by Joule heat, becomes untransmissible, and the optical path is cut off. In this way, an optical switch which is small-sized and can be driven by minor electric power is obtained.
