Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an optical controller, which is reduced in stroke and which is capable of switching at a high speed with a low power, by electrically converting the axis of a polarized light with the use of an electrochromic crystal so that it may be discriminated by a double refractive substance.
CONSTITUTION: A crystal 1, which is cut in parallel with a Z sxis from such a crystal of lithium tantalate as is composed of lithium oxide in a quantity exceeding tantalum oxide 10 to 30%, is formed with an inter-digital electrode 2, which uses a control voltage genreator 3 for impressing an electric field in an X direction, together with a double refractive substance 6, thus constituting an optical contoller. In case no voltage is impressed upon the electrode 2, the polarization 4 in the X direction to pass in the Y direction is allowed as it is to pass through the crystal 1 and te substance 6 so that it becomes an output light 8. In case a preset voltage is impressed upon the electrode 2, the polarization 4 is changed into that in the Z direction after it has passed through the crystal 1 and the substance 6 so that it becomes an output light 7, thus effecting the switching operations.
