Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an electrode for production of hydrogen which is superior in corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, does not cause electrodeposition of iron, is low in hydrogen overvoltage for a long period of time and is stable by coating a conductive base material with layers contg. oxides of metals of ≥1 kind of Ni, Co and Ag.
CONSTITUTION: The surfaces of a base material consisting of a perforated plate, an expanded metal or the like having suitable plate thickness, hole diameters and pitches are coated with layers contg. oxides of metals of ≥1 kinds out of Ni, Co, Ag, and particularly Ni and Ni oxide. Or the metal oxides existing in said coating are subjected to a reduction treatment under gentle conditions. The electrode for production of hydrogen obtained by such methods is extremely low in hydrogen overvoltage. The thickness of said coating layes is preferably ≥10μ. Suitable known methods are adaptable for the method of coating the base material, and above all a melt spraying method is one of the methods of giving the electrode best suited for the purpose of this invention.
