Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently manufacture high purity flake graphite by repeating a process of heat carbonizing a fixed amount of an iron group metal in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and a process of depositing flake graphite by cooling and collecting it.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon such as pitch coke is added to a molten iron group metal, especially molten cast iron held in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, and by heating to ≥1,400, especially ≥1,450°C the molten metal is satd. with carbon. The satd. molten cast iron is cooled to ≤1,300, especially ≤1,250°C by blowing a nonoxidizing gas such as N2 to deposit flake graphite. The graphite is introduced into a cyclone or the like together with exhaust gas, and it is collected. Carbon is added to the molten cast iron again after collecting the flake graphite, and the iron is satd. with carbon at said temp. It is then cooled by similar operation, and deposited flake graphite is collected. By repeating said operation using the same molten cast iron, flake graphite is collected and recovered.
