Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A liquid crystal compound of formulaI(R is 1W10C straight chain alkyl; R'is H or 1W10C straight chain alkyl).
EXAMPLE: o-Bromo-p-(P'-hexylphenyl)phenyl trans-4-pentylcyclohexylcarbonate.
USE: Useful as a liquid crystal material, having a wide liquid crystal temperature, a high clear point and a low viscosity and suitable for a two-frequency driving liquid crystal material.
PROCESS: As shown in the reaction formulas, commercially available p-phenylphenol is reacted with bromine in glacial acetic acid, and the resultant compound is then reacted with dimethyl sulfate. The reaction product is acylated with an alkyl chloride to form a compound, which is reduced with hydrazine hydrate and potassium hydroxide. The resultant compound is then reacted with a tans-4-alkylcyclo-hexylcarbonyl chloride to give the aimed compound of formulaI.
