Abstract
PURPOSE: To coat the outside of an optical fiber immediately after spinning in a uniform thickness at a high speed by combining a nonpressure coating system with a pressure coating system.
CONSTITUTION: A pressurization type coating vessel provided with dies 6 at the bottom is set at the outside of a nonpressurization type coating vessel 5 provided with dies 4 at the bottom, and a liq. coating material with a lower hardening rate and a liq. coating material with a higher hardening rate are fed to the vessels 5, 7 from a feeding pipe 10 and a pressure feeding pipe 11, respectively to form a coating apparatus 2. An optical fiber B obtd. by heat drawing a rodlike quartz glass material A in a heating furnace 1 is fed to the apparatus 2, where the material 8 in the vessel 5 is stuck to the fiber B to form a coated layer C, and the material 9 in the vessel 7 is further stuck to form a coated layer D. The fiber B is then introduced into a hardening furnace 3 to harden the layers C, D.
