Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable counterthrust generated in a pump to be prevented, by providing in a balancing pipe a pressure regulator valve for regulating pressure in a balancing chamber so as to control the open degree of the regulating valve in accordance with variation in intake pressure and the operating condition of the pump.
CONSTITUTION: Detected signals indicating a pump discharge pressure H2, a pump intake pressure HS and a pressure PB in a balancing chamber 8, respectively, are transmitted to an operation unit 12 for calculating an axial thrust force which is in turn transmitted to a comparing operation unit 13 for comparing with a predetermined allowable thrust force. The signal thus compared is then transmitted to a transmitter 14 which converts the transmitted signal into a pressure regulator controlling signal that is applied to a pressure regulator valve 10 to regulate the open degree of the latter. Thereby, the pressure PS of the balancing chamber 8 is adjusted so that the axial thrust force of the pump is set within an allowable range. With this arrangement, a fluctuating range of the axial thrust force is maintained to be small as possible, thereby to enable the life of a thrust bearing to be prolonged.
