Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate for the preparation of dyes, in high yield, suppressing the hydrolysis, by mixing a p-(lower alkoxy) aniline with nitric acid at a specific molar ratio, and reacting at a specific temperature in the presence of sulfuric acid.
CONSTITUTION: p-(Lower alkoxy)aniline (PAA) is made to react with nitric acid in the presence of sulfuric acid to obtain 3-nitro-4-(lower alkoxy)aniline (NAA). The reaction is carried out by mixing 0.7W1.3mol, pref. 0.9W1.1mol of nitric acid to 1mol of PAA, and keeping the temperature of the reaction mixture at -10W +20°C, pref. -5W+10°C. The PAA is e.g. p-methoxyaniline. The mixing of PAA and nitric acid is carried out continuously or intermittently at the above molar ratio. The feeding rate of the raw material is selected within the range in which the reaction system can be kept at the desired temperature.
