Abstract

PURPOSE:To carry out an azimuth control simultaneously with a control of height of a magnetic head without exchanging the magnetic tape, by performing the height control of the magnetic head in the state under which the tape is actually travels. CONSTITUTION:A test tape 1 is started to vary the height of a magnetic head and the azimuth. Thus the output voltage (frequency f1) caused by the leakage flux given from a recorded part 3 varies, and a voltmeter 9 indicates the maximum value when a magnetic gap of a magnetic head 5 is set at the center of width l2 of a recorded part 2. Accordingly the height of the head 5 is controlled so that the voltmeter 9 indicates the minimum value, and thus the magnetic gap is set at the center position of a prescribed track. Furthermore the azimuth is controlled to obtain the maximum level of the output voltage of frequency f2. As a result, the azimuth can be set at the best point.
