Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a fibrous active carbon, having a high strength and high adsorptivity, and rich in processablility, by oxidizing acrylic fibers containing a specific amount of compound of phosphorus and/or boron on an oxidizing atmosphere under specified conditions, and activating the oxidized fibers at a high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic fibers containing 0.01W0.3wt%, expressed in terms of phosphorus or/and boron, compound of phosphorus or/and boron, e.g. diammonium phosphate, are oxidized in an oxidizing atmosphere at 200W400°C to give a combined oxygen content ≥15% and a core ratio ≤8%. The resultant oxidized fibers are then mixed with a compound of phosphorus or/and boron or the content of the phosphorus or/and boron is adjusted to 0.04W1wt%, and the resultant fibers are activated at 900W1,300°C to afford the aimed fibrous active carbon.
