Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound having well balanced hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, by adding an epoxyalkane to active hydrogen atoms linked to the nitrogen atoms of a polyethyleneimine, adding an ethylenically unsaturated monomer thereto by the Michael reaction, and saponifying the resultant product. CONSTITUTION:An epoxyalkane of formula III (m is an integer 9-15) is added to active hydrogen atoms in a polyethyleneimine of formulaI(n is an integer) or formula II (x and y are integers; the ratio of the primary/secondary/tertiary nitrogen atoms is 1:2:1) at 50-150 deg.C for 1-30hr, and the resultant poly-N-beta- hydroxyalkylpolyethylene is subjected to the addition reaction with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. an alkyl acrylate, at 50-150 deg.C for 1-20hr by the Michael reaction, and the reaction product is then saponified with an alkali to give the aimed high polymer having beta-hydroxyalkyl groups and carboxyalkyl groups introduced into the polyethyleneimine molecule and the amphoteric surface activity.
