Abstract

1382744 Polyfluoroalkyl alcohols and esters ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 13 April 1973 [14 April 1972] 17937/73 Heading C2C Polyfluoroalkyl compounds having the general formula R f CH 2 CH 2 Z, where R f = C 1-23 perfluoroalkyl group, Z = -OH or -OCOR, where R = H or C 1-5 alkyl, are prepared by reacting at, e.g. 80‹ to 200‹ C. a halide where X = Br or I, with water and an amide of the general formula RCONR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>11</SP>, where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> = H or C 1-5 alkyl and R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> can be the same or different. Alcohols, esters or a mixture of the two may be produced (depending on reactant proportions) and unsaturated by-products R f CH = CH 2 may be formed. The preferred molar ratio of water to the halide is at least 1 : 1 and the preferred molar ratio of the amide to the halide is also at least 1 : 1. The polyfluoroalkyl alcohols and esters are useful for preparing, e.g. alkyl acrylate or alkyl methacrylate transesterification esters and perfluoroalkyl phosphates.
