Abstract

PURPOSE: Acrylonitrile polymer (AN) is modified by heating so that its density exceeds a certain level, mixed with untreated AN polymer, dissolved in a solvent, then made into fiber, thus producing carbon fiber in a shortened time, eliminating the thermal oxidation process.
CONSTITUTION: A powder of AN polymer is dried usually, then heat treated, preferably in an inert atmosphere at 200W400°C to prepare a modified polymer with a density of higher than 1.20g/cm3. The resultant modified polymer is combined with an untreated AN polymer, than dissolved in a solvent and made into fiber. The resultant fiber is heat treated at a temperature exceeding 1,000°C to give the objective carbon fiber.
