Abstract

PURPOSE: A powder of acrylonitrile polymer is heat treated and dissolved in a solvent, then made into fiber, and heat treated to produce carbon fiber, eliminating thermal oxidation process, in a shortened time at low costs.
CONSTITUTION: Before being subjected to fiber forming, a powder of acrylonitrile polymer containing more than 80wt% acrylonitrile is, preferably dried to adjust its water content and heat treated, preferably in an inert atmosphere such as in a nitrogen gas at 200W400°C. Then, the resultant polymer is dissolved in a solvent such as nitric acid to form a solution of 15W30wt% concentration. The solution is made into fiber and the fiber is carbonized by treating with heat at over 1,000°C in an inert atmosphere. The heat treatment of the polymer powder is effected so that its density becomes higher than 1.20g/cm3.
