Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve ignitionability of a spark plug, by controlling cooling fluid, fed to the spark plug, in accordance with engine temperature, and holding temperature of the spark plug to within a prescribed range. CONSTITUTION:A spark plug 1 is mounted to a cylinder block A, and an annular cooling passage 13 is formed in a gap between a porcelain insulator 12 and metal fittings 11. Said cooling passage 13 is communicated respectively to a cooling water supply source 21 in a water jacket through a feed flow line 22 and to a cooling device of radiator or the like through a discharge flow line 24. Then a control valve 51 is interposed in the feed flow line 22, and temperature is controlled by a control circuit 5 on the basis of input from a temperature sensor 4 mounted to an engine. Accordingly, a firing part of the spark plug 1 can be always maintained to 500-800 deg.C to prevent occurrence of smoky contamination or preignition of the plug.
