Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sintered tool steel having a high density and excellent abrasion resistance by a method wherein a reducing gas is introduced and pressure is controlled during the sintering of a compact of a high alloy steel powder containing C, Cr, V and W, and both sintering and nitriding are carried out simultaneously by introducing nitrogen gas.
CONSTITUTION: A powddr of a high-alloy high speed steel containing C, Cr, V, W and Mo, Co is compacted. In a part or the entire period of the sintering of the compacted body under a reduced pressure, a reducing gas such as CO is introduced into a sintering furnace and the pressure inside the furnace is controlled at 0.2W500 Torr, under which condition the compacted body is heat treated and sintered. In a part or the entire part of the period from the start of sintering to a cooling process, nitrogen gas is introduced and temperature is raised so as to conduct a nitriding treatment concurrently with the sintering. Accordingly, a sintered alloy having a high density and being nitrided can be obtained by only the sintering process, and a sintered tool steel having a long useful life and suitable for continuous cutting or the like can be obtained.
