PURPOSE:To set the density of even gradation-processing binary coding by using gradation-processing comparison levels as many as the set densities of simple binary coding, and specifying a processing comparison level by a binary-coding processing-mode indication signal and a density indication signal. CONSTITUTION:In an ROMDMD2, groups of comparison level data for gradation processinag and those for simple binary-coding processing are stored as many as density specifying signals. Address data for the DMD2 is generated by a picture-element address specifying circuit ACC for picture elements in a main and a subordinate scanning direction, and an address switching circuit AEC. The AEC inputs the output of the ACC, a gradation control signal for binary- coding mode indication and density indication signals. With a binary-coding processing mode signal, the comparison level data for the gradation-processing binary coding or simple binary coding of the DMD2 is specified, and the group of the gradation-processing comparison level used for the gradation binary coding and the binary-coding processing comparison level for the simple binary coding are specified by the density indication signals.
