Abstract

PURPOSE: Fine particles of metal or metal compound are made to stick to the surface of previously prepared carbon fiber and the resultant fiber is kept under conditions where carbon fiber is formed through vapor-phase process to produce the titled carbon fiber suitably used for composite materials together with a resin and for felt.
CONSTITUTION: Fine particles of metal in GroupIVa, Va, VIa, VIIa and VIII such as Ti, Nb, Cr, Mn or Fe or metal compound with particle sizes of less than 300Å are seeded on the surface of carbon fiber produced by carbonization of organic fiber such as polyacrylonitrile fiber or made by the vapor-phase process by 0.001W0.3wt% and the resultant fiber is kept under conditions where carbon fiber is formed through vapor-phase process to produce carbon fiber with branches. Futher, it can be treated at elevated temperature higher than 2,000°C to produce graphite fiber of higher performance.
