Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a carbon fiber fabric having improved strength and modulus, by carbonizing acrylic fibers, flameproofed in the atmosphere of an active gas under specific conditions, in the atmosphere of an inert gas.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic fibers having a melting point Tf of 310°C or above, preferably 315W380°C, consisting of 94 wt.% or more of acrylonitrile are preheated in air or steam under a tension of preferably ≥0.001 g/d. A precursor fabric having a free area shrinkage in flameproofing ≤50% made from the fibers is flameproofed at 200W260°C in the atmosphere of an active gas, e.g. an oxygen-containing gas, with a permissible shrinkage ≥80% of the area shrinkage. The fabric is then carbonized in the atmosphere of an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, at 800°C or above to give the desired fabric.
