Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a carbon fiber reinforced metal with excellent mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, by immersing carbon fibers coated with Ni in molten Cu or a molten metal based on Cu to mutually diffuse Ni and a Cu-based metal.
CONSTITUTION: On a surface of carbon fiber with a diameter of 3W20μ, an Ni layer with a thickness of 0.1W3μ is coated by electroplating, electroless plating, vapor deposition or arc welding. This Ni coated carbon fibers are immersed in molten Cu or Cu alloy and said Ni is diffused into Cu or Cu alloy to be alloyed. The carbon fibers are withdrawn from the molten metal and carbon fibers and an alloy of Ni and Cu-based metal are integrated. Or, the desired amount thereof are arranged in a graphite die in such a manner that directions of fiber axes are random or oriented to a desired direction and integrally molded into a desired shape by pressing and heating. As a result, a carbon fiber reinforced metal with high elasticity, strength, abrasion resistance and heat resistance can be produced.
