Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a vat dye of good quality in high yield, by a method wherein 1-aminoanthraquinone is condensed with an alkaline condensation agent to obtain a reaction product which is then chlorinated directly in a sulfuric acid solvent, and then impurities are removed from the resulting product.
CONSTITUTION: 1-Aminoanthraquinone is condensed in the presence of dimethylformamide and an oxidizing agent by the action of an alkaline condensation agent. The reaction mixt. is diluted with water or an org. solvent and filtered to obtain a reaction product which is then dissolved in a sulfuric acid solvent. Chlorine gas is passed through the resulting soln. to chlorinate the reaction product. Impurities are removed by adjusting the concentration of sulfuric acid to obtain the desired vat dye of the formula (wherein n is 1, 2). By this process, an after-treatment stage can be deleted in which indanthrone is derived from the condensation product obtd. from 1-aminoanthraquinone by using the alkaline condensation agent.
