Abstract

PURPOSE: To economically recover rhodium dissolved in waste water with high efficiency by adjusting the water to a predetermined pH with a neutralizing agent, depositing a rhodium compound in the presence of activated carbon, and separating it.
CONSTITUTION: Rhodium-contg. acidic waste water is adjusted to 4W6 or 9W10.5 pH with a neutralizing agent such as NH3 or caustic soda, and an adequate amount of powdered or granular activated carbon is added. The carbon may be added before adding the agent. A rhodium compound is deposited in the presence of the carbon and subjected to solid-liq. separation with a centrifugal separator having a filter face precoated with a filter aid such as diatomaceous earth or pearlite to recover the rhodium deposit easily and economically. This method is effective in treating waste water of ≤3.5 pH acidified with phosphoric acid, and it is especially suitable for treating very little rhodium-contg. waste water discharged from a process of recovering an olefin hydroformylation catalyst.
