Abstract

PURPOSE: To selectively remove heavy metal ions contained in excess sludge discharged from a waste water treating system by an activated sludge method, by adding a specified amt. of a complexon cpd. to the sludge in solid-liquid separation of the sludge to enhance the coagulating and dehydrating properties of the sludge.
CONSTITUTION: When plant waste water, sewage, etc. are treated by an activated sludge method using activated sludge bacteria, excess sudge is formed as a by- product. This sludge is very difficult to coagulate and dehydrate, and it contains harmful heavy metals such as Cd. 0.001W0.06 g of a complexon cpd. such as EDTA is added to 1 g of this sludge to adjust the sludge to the weakly acidic pH range of 3W6. After adding water as required the sludge is agitated to coagulate or dehydrate solid matter in the sludge followed by solid-liquid separation by filtration or the like. The harmful heavy metals such as Cd are selectively chelated and dissolved in the aq. phase. Accordingly, dry excess sludge contg. no harmful heavy metal is obtd., and it can be used as fertilizer and feed.
