Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the dimensional controllability of an optical fiber base material without deteriorating the mass producibility by detecting the tip position of a glass sintered body and controlling the extent of the body moved when the body is formed. CONSTITUTION:Fine powdered glass 8, 9 obtd. by reacting glass starting mterials is spouted from oxyhydrogen burners 5, 6 to form glass sintered body 1. TV camera 10 is set at one side of body 1 to detect tip position 11 of body 1. This detected signal is outputted to position detector 12 to detect a signal corresponding to the gap between reference signal 13 and actual position 11 of body 1. This signal is amplified with amplifier 14 and inputted into variable motor 15 for driving rollers 2 as a feedback signal to control motor 15 so that position 11 of body 1 is fixed. Thus, the efficiency of depositing glass 8, 9 as body 1 is kept constant, and the outside diameter and density of body 1 are made uniform in the axial direction.
