Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce a low-loss optical fiber base material at a low cost by feeding silica powder and a reaction gas into a glass tube with the bottom sealed followed by heating. CONSTITUTION:Silica powder is fed into glass tube 1 with the bottom sealed from inner nozzle 2 at a rate of about 1g/min. About 100mg/min of POCl4 or GeCl4 are mixed into about 500cc/min of oxygen gas, and the resulting reaction gas is fed from outer nozzle 3. Tube 1 is being slowly moved downward by glass tube moving motor 6. The powder and the gas are heated to about 1500 deg.C in heating furnace 4 and converted into glass, thus depositing optical fiber base material 5 at the bottom of tube 1.
