Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain coke whose crystal structure is improved similar to that of coke obtd. from coal of good quality, by a method wherein coal of poor quality is mixed with a specified bituminous material having a high naphthene content, and the mixture is dry-distilled.
CONSTITUTION: At least 5wt% bituminous material, which has a ring structure of a high condendensation degree and less side chains and containing partially naphthene rings, is mixed with coal of poor quality. The mixture is placed in a dry distillation furnace, and subjected to reforming and dry distillation by heating, whereby coke structure is made anisotropic. In order to obtain the sufficient effect of the bituminous material on reforming, it is necessary to add at least 5wt% bituminous material to the coal of poor quality. The proportion of the anisotropic structure in coke is increased as the amount of the bituminous material to be added is increased. But, since the effect is saturated with 30wt%, an amount more than 30wt% is economically wasteful.
