Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately measure the propagation time of a sound wave by correcting according to the maximum value of the wave form of the received sound wave, the threshold for discriminating the maximum value, the propagation speed of the first arrival wave, and the propagation speed of the arrival wave having the maximum value.
CONSTITUTION: The output from a microphone 4 is detected by an envelop detection circuit 7. The envelop detection output is supplied for a peak detection circuit 8 to detect a peak value, which is discriminated from a prescribed level in a level discrimination circuit 9. Outputs from the peak detection circuit 8, the level discrimination circuit 9, and a pulse oscillator 3 are supplied for an operational circuit 10. Time needed for a sound wave to reach a threshold is corrected according to the maximum value in the amplitude distribution of received signals, the speed of the first arrival wave of the sound wave, and the speed of the arrival wave having the maximum value. Thus, the propagation time of the first arrival wave of the received sound wave can be calculated, and displayed on an indicator 16.
