Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the cycle life of a separator used for a zinc alkaline storage battery, by making a porous sheet to be impregnated with a salt of a metal having a small hydrogen overvoltage, being followed by reducing the salt to make the metal to be held in the sheet by adsorption. CONSTITUTION:The separator of an alkaline storage battery having a zinc electrode is made of a porous sheet in which an alkali-proof fine metal grains with a small hydrogen overvoltage are held by adsorption. In order to prepare the separator, which is comprised of the porous sheet and the former fine metal grains held in the sheet by adsorption, the former porous sheet is impregnated with a salt of the said metal, such as nickel chloride, nickel nitrate, iron chloride or iron acetate, before the impregnated sheet undergoes reduction, for example, in a sodium borohydride solution to make fine metal grains to be held in the sheet by adsorption. As the porous sheet, a woven cloth or a nonwoven cloth which is made of a polyethylene, a polypropylene or the like, or a ceramic or the like should be used.
