Abstract
864,347. Batteries. YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. April 4, 1957 [April 4, 1956], No. 11088/57. Class 53. A silver-zinc battery is provided with a negative electrode comprising a copper support having interstices to receive the deposited zinc. Figs. 1 and 2 show a support consisting of sheets of copper gauze 10 held together by nylon threads or copper wire 11. Current is conducted to and from the sheets by a wire 12 threaded through the sheets. Instead of gauze sheets the support may consist of expanded metal or of wire wool. The support may be assembled in a cell with a silver positive electrode and an alkali zincate solution. On charging, zinc is deposited in the interstices of the carrier. Fig. 3 shows an alternative construction in which a perforated zinc sheet 13 has copper meshes 10 attached to each side by a wire 15. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the support consists of a mat 16 of copper turnings, fillings &c. enclosed between two copper screens 10 1 , 10 2 held in position by a wire 15. Alternatively the support may be enclosed in a bag made of copper mesh. Fig. 6 shows a further modification in which a zinc core 18 covered with electrolytically deposited or sprayed zinc is provided with a sprayed deposit of finely-divided copper 19. In another method a mixture of zinc and copper powders is wetted with water or an alkali silicate and applied to a copper support and shaped by compression or sintering.
