Abstract

PURPOSE: To control the number of operative cylinders according to the operational condition of a multicylinder engine, by omitting an intake-air stop valve, and in place of the same, providing a throttle valve in each of the intake passages for operative cylinders and inoperative cylinders.
CONSTITUTION: In intake passages 4A, 4B respectively for a front cylinder group #1W#3 and a rear cylinder group #4W#6, there are respectively provided intake-air flow controlling throttle valves 7A, 7B and fuel injection valves 9A, 9B for feeding fuel at a rate corresponding to the rate of intake-air flow. The throttle valve 7B in one intake passage 4B is connected to the accelerator pedal, while the throttle valve 7A in the other intake passage 4A is connected to a vacuum operated actuator that is operated by partial vacuum developed at a venturi 11B of the intake passage 4B. These two intake passages 4A, 4B are communicated to each other on the downstream side of the throttle valves 7A, 7B via a connecting passage 12, in which there is provided a control valve 13 that is opened at the time of low-speed operation of the engine excluding the period of idling operation. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to stop supply of intake air and fuel by closig the throttle valve 7A and the control valve 13 at the time of idling operation and low-load, medium-and high-speed operation of the engine.
