Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable a case hardening steel to be hardened to high surface pressure strength by carbonitriding by adjusting the C, Mn, Cr, Ni and Mo content of the steel to a range represented by a specified equation.
CONSTITUTION: This steel consists of 0.25W1.5% C, ≤1% Si, 0.3W1.5% Mn, 0.35W1.5% Cr and the balance Fe or further contains ≤2% Ni and/or ≤0.5% Mo while restricting the C, Mn, Cr, Mo and Ni content to a range represented by the equation. This steel can be provided with ≥Hv 600 surface hardness equal to that of a carburized steel even by carbonitriding with less consumption of energy. In the above-mentioned composition C, Ni and Mo may further be restricted to 0.25W 0.35% C, 1W2% Ni and 0.15W0.3% Mo.
