Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the inferior machinability of a high Mn steel contg. a specified amt. of C, Si, Mn, etc. to be canceled by setting the oxide compsn. of the steel in the gehlenite region of the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 ternary phase diagram and restricting the three-component system oxide content and the Ca content.
CONSTITUTION: The oxide compsn. of a high Mn steel consisting of C≤0.5%, Si≤2%, Mn 7W40%, and the balance Fe, etc. is adjusted so that it is set in the gehlenite region of the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 ternary phase diagram. The three-component system oxide content is adjusted to 80% or more of the total oxide content, and the Ca content to 0.0005W0.02%. The resulting low-carbon high-Mn steel is suitable for use low expansion steel products or wear resistant steel products which attach importance to machinability regardless of form, exhibit high strength, and are nonmagnetic.
