Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as a synthetic raw material of lactic acid and other organic chemicals, without using multi-step reaction process and complicated separating process, by contacting an aqueous solution of lactonitrile with a specific catalyst at a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing 1W50wt%, pref. 5W30wt% of lactonitrile is brought into contact with MnO2 as a catalyst at 30W200°C, pref. 50W130°C, for 2W10 hours to obtain lactamide. The lactonitrile can be easily prepared by reacting acetaldehyde with hydrocyanic acid. The MnO2 used as a catalyst is powder, granules, or tables obtained, e.g. by the heat decomposition of a manganese salt such as manganese nitrate or is the one on the market.
