Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain thin carbonaceous whisker with high aspect ratio and high grade by producing whisker by a hydrocarbon vapor phase decomposition method using calcined iron thiocyanate (II) as catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Iron thiocyanate (II) is calcined at about 500W1200, pref. 900W 1200°C and used as catalyst. Base material such as alumina, mullite or quarts is coated with about 10-6W10-3 gram atom/cm2 of the catalyst as iron atom. The coated material is put into a furnace core tube, where hydrocarbon gas introduced is contacted to the catalyst to induce thermal decomposition at about 900W1300, pref. 1000W1200°C, giving carbonaceous whisker. This whisker has a diameter about 2W10μ and an aspect ratio above about 100, and hence it is of utility value as composite reinforcing material.
