Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled carbon fiber, useful as a reinforcing fibrous material for a composite material, etc., and having improved oxidation and heat resistance in an oxygen atmosphere at a high temperature, by decomposing a hydrocarbon in a nonoxidizing atmosphere in the presence of sulfur (compound) at a specific temperature thermally.
CONSTITUTION: A mullite boat is inserted into the center of a quartz reaction tube, and a hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, ethane, benzene, toluene, naphthalene or anthracene, is decomposed thermally in the presence of sulfur or a sulfur compound, e.g. hydrogen sulfide, thiophene or carbon disulfide, at 700W1,500°C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere with a carrier gas, e.g. hydrogen gas, to give the aimed carbon fiber. A heat-resistant substrate, e.g. porcelain containing alumina, silica, etc. or carbon may be placed on the mullite boat, and the hydrocarbon may be brought into contact with the substrate and decomposed thermally.
