Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the formability and stress corrosion cracking resistance of an Al-Mg alloy by adding a specified amt. of Bi to the alloy.
CONSTITUTION: An alloy consisting of, by wt., Mg 3W4.4%, Bi 0.06W0.9%, and the balance Al and inevitable impurities or optionally contg. one or more out of Mn 0.05W1.0%, Cr 0.05W0.3%, Zr 0.05W0.3%, V 0.03W0.2%, Ti 0.01W 0.25%, B 0.0001W0.05%, Cu 0.05W0.4% and Be 0.0001W0.05% is homogenized at 400W580°C for 3W48hr to uniformly precipitate the elements added in trace amts. as a fine intermetallic cpd. as well as to dissolve the Mg and Cu. The alloy is then hot rolled at a start temp. of 400W550°C and a finish temp. of 200W350°C, and softened at 360W450°C for 30W3hr to give a grain-refined high strength alloy optimum for use as a material for a car wheel.
