Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain graphite fibers having improved strength and modulus of elasticity, by flameproofing a polyacrylonitrile fibrous precursor, carbonizing the flameproofed fibers, and graphitizing the carbonized fibers under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A polyacrylonitrile fibrous presursor is flameproofed and carbonized. In a graphitizing zone through which the carbonized fibers are passed, the passing time in a temperature zone at ≥1,500°C is set within 0.5min and the tension of the fibers to be treated is kept at 100W600mg/denier. The carbonized fibers are graphitized and then graphitized at a tension of the fibers ≤20mg/ denier and a maximal temperature of at least 2,000°C to give the aimed graphite fibers. Preferably, a single graphitizing zone is used.
