Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers having a good adhesive property to a resin, by flameproofing acrylonitrile fibers in an oxidizing atmosphere, and carbonizing the resultant flameproofed fibers in an inert atmosphere while flowing an inert gas in a direction opposite to the running fibers.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile fibers are flameproofed in an oxidizing atmosphere at 200W300°C and then carbonized at 250W1,800°C in an inert atmosphere while flowing an inert gas in a direction opposite to the running fibers to give the aimed fibers. Preferably, the gas flow velocity in a carbonizing furnace is set at 5W200cm/ sec, and the quantity of the gas to be fed is 1×102W1×103cm3/g based on the weight of the flameproofed fibers.
