Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the captioned ester of high purity at a high yield and with ease by electrolytically condensing adipic acid monomethyl ester in CH3OH then removing CH3OH, passing the residual solution through an anion exchange resin tower to let the above-mentioned ester (alkali metal salt) be adsorbed or other.
CONSTITUTION: Part of the electrolyte obtained through electrolytic condensation of adipic acid monomethyl ester in CH3OH is circulated between an electrolytic cell 2 and electrolyte tank 1 and the remaining part is supplied to a distillation tower 3. In the tower 3, CH3OH is distilled and the remaining solution (CH3OH concentration 5% or under) in the lower part of the tower 3 is sent to the upper part of a weak (medium) basic anion exchange resin tower 4, where adipic acid monomethyl ester (alkali metal salt) is adsorbed in the resin. The solution composed primarily of sebacic acid dimethyl ester is extracted from the lower part of the tower 4 and is further distilled. On the other hand, the CH3OH distilled from the tower 3 is led from the lower part of the tower 4, whereby the desorption and regeneration of the resin are accomplished.
