Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce treating time and labor and improve quality by subjecting steel to gas soft nitriding at a temperature below A1 transformation point then raising its temperature in the same furnace in succession and subjecting the same to gas carburizing and quenching or gas carbonitriding. CONSTITUTION:After steel is subjected to gas soft nitriding at the temperature below its A1 transformation point, it is raised of temperature in the same furnace in succession and is subjected to gas carburizing and quenching or gas carbonitriding at the temperature above its A1 transformation point. Thereby, the layer of Fe-N base compound (Fe3N, Fe4N, etc.) and the martensite layer of Fe-C-N layer are formed on the steel surface and yet multiple fine voids are created near the surface. According to this method, gas carburizing and quenching are accomplished after gas soft nitriding and therefore more voids are formed in the surface layer as compared to conventional processes, hence this blank permits impregnation of lubricating oil when used for friction material, resulting in considerably reduced friction force.
