Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to accomplish the tenacity tests with high reliability by using a test piece of such a preset shape as is prepared by cutting crosswise a steel pipe, by splitting the steel ring into halves and by forming a longitudinal notch at the center.
CONSTITUTION: The test piece is sized and shaped to have a height of D/2 and a width of 10mm (wherein: D stands for the outside diameter of the steel pipe; and t stands for the thickness of the same). The V-shaped notch is cut to have an angle of 45 degrees, a radius of curvature of 0.25mm and a depth d (of 1mm for the thickness larger than 3mm and of 0.5mm for the thickness smaller than 3mm) and to extend in parallel with the center axis. The test piece thus prepared is placed on the anvil 10 with its arcuate side being positioned above, and a weight is dropped down thereon. The test piece is held in advance at a test temperature (ranging from -196°C to +100°C). The operations of dropping the weight for the rupture are accomplished several times at each temperature, and the ruptured surface is observed so that the brittleness percentage and rupture transition temperature are judged.
