Abstract

PURPOSE: To form shot of a uniform shape and size by pouring molten high carbon ferronickel into an oil vessel from the upper part and by taking out the resulting shot from the vessel bottom.
CONSTITUTION: Molten high carbon ferronickel of about 1250W1450°C is poured into a bath contg. oil such as quenching oil of about 20W30°C in the form of droplets or thin stream. The molten metal is subjected to a moderate cooling action and solidified before it reaches the vessel bottom. The resulting shot is taken out of the bottom. By suitably selecting the pouring conditions and the height of the cooling oil vessel the shot is formed into an arbitrary shape such as spherical, ellipsoidal or flat shape. By this method uniform shot is simply formed, and the transportation is facilitated by treating the shot to improve the magnetizability.
