Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the friction resistance between the casting mold and steel billet by causing dispersion and eutectoid reaction of solid lubricant in the inside surface plating portions of a copper-made casting mold for horizontal continuous casting of steel.
CONSTITUTION: After the copper-made casting mold for horizontal continuous casting is degreased, it is dipped in an aqueous solution of 5% sulfuric acid to activate its surface. Next, while fine powder of graphite fluoride is being suspended at a ratio of 300 g/l in an electroplating solution of Ni, Cr, Co, etc., the mold is electroplated for 40 hours at cathode current density 2A/dm2, temperature 50°C. This yields the composite plating layer composed of 83% of plating metal such as Ni or other and 17% of fine particles 8 such as graphite fluoride as solid lubricant on the inside surface of the casting mold 4. The graphite fluoride fine particles 8 makes even dispersion and eutectoid in the Ni plating layer 7, oozes out during continuous casting work and spreads between the inside surface of the casting mold and the billet, thereby reducing the friction resistance baetween both and preventing breakout of the billet.
