Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture high strength hoop which has a structure composed of two phases, bainite and remained austenite, and is excellent in ductility, by the heat treatment of medium carbon steel hoop under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:A hoop is manufactured from steel contg. 0.40-0.85% C, 1.4- 2.5% Si, 0.30-1.00% Mn. The structure of the hoop is completely converted to austenite by heating it at a temp. not lower than AC3 transformation point. Then the hoop is cooled to a temp. range 380-480 deg.C at a cooling rate not smaller than that passing the nose of TTT curve. The hoop is kept at a constant temp. until 65-85% of the super cooled austenite is transformed to bainite, then it is air-cooled or cooled at a cooling rate not smaller than that of air cooling to room temp. The hoop has a composite structure composed of 65-85% bainite, the balance being remained austenite, having simultaneously high strength and very high ductility, and high word-hardening property.
