Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve and promote combustion particularly at the latter stage of combustion, by forming in the combustion chamber an electric field for directing flame to portions of the combustion chamber where the speed of flame propagation is low, and thereby increasing the speed of flame propagation.
CONSTITUTION: At the end of compression stroke, mixture in combustion chamber 1 is ignited and flame is produced near the top of combustion chamber 1. When flame thus produced is propagated near to the end portions of electrodes 8a, 8b of flame sensor 8, these electrodes 8a, 8b are conducted with each other since the mixture is ionized, and current is passed therethrough. By this current, a valtage is produced across opposite ends of resistance R1 and the current is supplied to circuit 11 for controlling impression of high voltage. At the instant, high-voltage power source 13 is driven so that a high voltage positive to the engine body is impressed to electrode 7. Resultantly, negative electrodes are constituted by cylinder block 3 and piston 2 connected electrically to the engine body, so that an electric field is developed in combustion chamber 1.
