Abstract
PURPOSE: To lower fuel consumption and to increase output of an internal combustion engine effectively, by producing an electric field in the combustion chamber, and thereby increasing the combustion speed of mixture.
CONSTITUTION: When mixture is ignited at the end of compression stroke, a high voltage is impressed between side wall 13, piston 4 and electric field producing electrode 9 by means of high-voltage power source 12, so that an electric field is formed in combustion chamber 3. As combustion spreads from the position of ignition plug 8, engine operation proceeds from compression stroke to expansion stroke, so that piston 4 is moved downward. In this expansion stroke, flame is attracted to the upper surface of piston 4 and the side wall surface of combustion chamber 3 which serve as negative electrode, whereby the flame propagating speed is increased and flame is made to propagate to every corners in combustion chamber 3, so that combustion of mixture is promoted. Further, since the electric field is not uniform in combstion chamber 3, flame attracting force acted therein is also not uniform. Therefore, curvatures are formed on the flame propagating plane, which is effective in increasing the combustion speed, so that fuel consumption is lowered and output of engine is increased.
