Abstract

PURPOSE: To readily form an electrochromic material layer of even thickness and superior adhesiveness on substrates by providing an intermediate layer composed of the specific oxide thin film on the electrode substrates and coating and drying a transition metal compound solution thereon.
CONSTITUTION: Solution of tin compound or antimony compound is coated and dried on electrode substrates and the coating film thus obtained is baked, whereby the oxide thin film (intermediate layer) having good adhesiveness to the electrochromic layer such as of tin oxide, antimony oxide, etc. and electroconductivity is formed, on which a solution of a transition metal compound (e.g., butanol solution of tungsten chloride) is coated and is dried at near room temperature, whereby the electrochromic display material layer is formed. Next, a counter electrode layer is disposed onto the abovementioned electrode substrates and an ion conductive layer is sandwiched, whereby the electrochromic display element is provided.
