Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the thermal deformation of a quartz tube thereby to produce a material rod having a uniform diameter and a uniform refractive index distribution by holding the quartz tube such that its axial temperature distribution has at least two maximums. CONSTITUTION:An oxyhydrogen burner having two nozzle holes are supplied at its inner hole 1 with oxygen gases and at its outer hole 2 with hydrogen gases. If the burner is moved while being heated along a quartz tube, a portion of the oxygen gases coming from the inner hole 1 is blown directly onto the quartz tube, without being mixed with the hydrogen gases, so that it acts as a cooling gas. Thus, the temperature distribution having two maximums such as 1300 deg.C can be stably established with the use of the single heating source. Thus, it is possible to produce a material rod which has a uniform core diameter and a uniform refractive index distribution.
