Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce a base material for an optical fiber having a desirable refractive index distribution for transmission, by forming a porous sintered glass product for use as an optical fiber by the use of a glass particle synthesizing torch provided with a subsidiary gas blow opening. CONSTITUTION:A base material for an optical fiber is produced by passing a glass forming material gas through a glass particle synthesizing torch 6 having blow ports 21, 22 for glass forming material, an inert gas blow port 23, a combusion gas blow opening 24, a combustion supporting gas blow opening 25 and a subsidiary gas blow opening 27 which surrounds the above ports and openings and which communicates with a temperature-regulating device 27 which controls the temperature of the gas to control the heat distribution of a porous sintered glass product; growing, by hydrolysis or thermal decomposition reaction, an oxide glass sintered product 4 at one end of a rotating and rising supporting rod 3; and thereafter, heating the sintered product by a heater 5, thereby vitrifying the sintered product.
