Abstract

PURPOSE: The thermal decomposition of gases of hydrocarbons of 2W5 carbon atoms is conducted by passing them through a specific whisker formation zone to produce efficiently carbon whiskers of less varied and high quality in good reproducibility and high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A starting gas consisting of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons of 2W5 carbon atoms is passed through the whisker formation zone at a rate of 0.1W5 cm/min. In the whisker formation zone, are placed fine particles of a metal element as iron, cobalt, nickel, vandium, manganese, zirconium molybdenum, or their alloys, carbides, oxides, or the carbon that has an interval (d002) of less than 3.4Å between (002) crystal faces measured by X-ray diffraction method, in an amount of 1 × 10-5 W 1 × 10-4 equivalent. Thus, high-quality whiskers with aspect ratios of more than 500 are produced in high yeield.
